Who We are

About the Founder

Hope 4 Athletes Foundation is the brainchild of Eric “Kwame” Appiah, a native of Asamankese, Ghana. In 2018, Kwame established the foundation with the sole purpose of providing opportunities for underprivileged children in his hometown. Kwame had seen firsthand the hopelessness in many children living in destitute states who were waiting for a chance for better education, healthier meals, and adequate shelter, and the opportunity to enjoy the sport they love soccer.

The goal is to create an environment that uses soccer as a tool to provide hope for kids, providing them with health and nutrition as well as a place for them to have shelter. By doing this, they will have a sense of hope that they are valued and cherished and they will have a quality education and play sports. This may also help change their family’s lives. Following the completion of this program, the boys have the chance to become professional soccer players after the age of 18, to continue their education in Ghana or abroad at a high school and/or college, or to become a staff member of the Academy.

What We Do

We aim to accomplish this through three main objectives:

1) To prepare the children for higher education and leadership. Since the inception of the foundation, H4AF has taken on the full financial responsibility of tuition and school fees for each student. Since education is highly privatized in Ghana, many parents make the hard decision of forgoing education due to the financial burden. For us at H4AF, it’s all about equity. We can supply the materials, but we need to make sure they have the tools to succeed to utilize those materials. Many of our students, when we began, were reading at a 2nd-grade reading level. Although books were supplied, our students didn’t have the knowledge and education to succeed. That’s why we are intentional about taking it a step further by providing school uniforms, supplies, and private tutors 3 days a week who really invest in the students and make it their mission to help them succeed.

Moreover, we have provided much-needed technology in the village via the generous donation of 5 computers, where the students are able to take their education a step further with research, Math and English online labs, and typing practice. The foundation also provides assistance with developing the student through leadership training. We do this via monthly seminars where we have guest speakers, often in non-athletic fields who lecture the students on various topics such as resilience, humility and giving back.

2) To improve overall health and wellbeing (how?) Health is holistic and needs to be treated as such. At H4AF, we place high importance on the well-being of each student. Thus, each student is provided with 3 nutritious meals a day, most of which are locally grown in the community, thus supporting local farmers. Further, we provide safe and secure housing, an essential that was once unattainable to most of the students. We place high importance on hygrine and dental health, demonstrating the importance of preventable illness, which is a growing issue in a small, poor community like Asamankese, Ghana.

3) To develop their talent in soccer (how?) For many of the students, soccer has been the only means of ‘getting out of their situation’. Through the foundation, we have hired a qualified soccer coach who provides daily soccer training to the students and leads them during matches. They are able to travel outside their community to engage in friendly matches with other teams. By playing these friendly matches the students have received recognition from some of the national team coaches of the Ghana Football Association which has motivated them. We have also played games in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, and after the games, we were able to give the students an excursion of the capital. We usually arrange 3 matches in a month for the students, this enables them to use what they learned in practices and implement those skills during games. We have also secured satellite cable for them at the academy house where they are able to watch foreign soccer leagues so that they can learn from the elite players in the world while learning sportsmanship, work ethic, and resilience.
